About LU Social
"It is hard to believe that a few years ago LU Social didn’t exist. We are at the point now where it is an integral part of the international experience at LU, and it is hard to imagine what life would be like without it. However, this was not always the case. When I first came to LU a few years ago, there was nothing like this.
My classmates and I struggled to make sense of what was going on around us and we barely knew each other before classes started. Luckily for us, we were all a pretty social and outgoing group so we managed to do things on our own and came together quickly despite the lack of external support and resources.
I was personally very fortunate to have made some great friends in the upper years purely by chance and they helped guide me through my first year in Riga. These people were essentially my buddies and came to be some of my best friends and I honestly would not have made it without them! (I hope you all have the same experience with your actual buddies!)
As the year went on, I realized not many people had this opportunity and were quite disconnected from other semesters and the happenings of the school at large. As I was moving forward into my second year, my friends and I knew we wanted to make a change so we had a small intro house party with all the people from LU in the first 2 years as well as created a Facebook group to answer questions. This was met with great reception and we thought to ourselves that we have to do more and make this official. So, LU Social was born on a rainy October night after hours of discussion at a small cafe in Old Town. From there on we started organizing our first event: a Pub Quiz. The turnout was amazing so we instantly started planning our next event and so on and so forth.
Eventually we became big enough to take our plans to the administration where we were welcomed and encouraged to continue our work. In time, a Pub Quiz became a theme party and a theme party became Freshmen Week and that became the LU vs RSU beer-pong tournament!
And now LU Social is what it is today - doing more than just parties and social events but also social awareness, a mental health program, and a general group to guide students through the challenges and struggles of living in a new country. All of this has been made possible by you guys supporting us throughout the journey, and I’m really looking forward to what the future holds for LU Social. Our team has always been amazing from day one, but I truly believe it is now the strongest it has ever been! So stay tuned and keep your eyes and ears open... there are a lot of great things to come!"
